What had his mother done to Miss Mary? Her hair was piled loosely on her head with a few curls arranged in a becoming fashion to frame her face, and her dress was neither somber in color nor fit. Had he ever seen a lady with a complexion so well-suited to that shade of pink?

Lady Matlock coughed softly, and Wes darted a guilty look at her. However, it was not he who was the subject of his mother’s displeasure.

“The lace.” Lady Matlock extended her hand in Mary’s direction.

Surely, she was not going to make Mary discard that lace, was she? The neckline of Miss Mary’s dress was tantalizing enough with the lace where it was.

Mary drew and released a breath in a heavy sigh as she did what Wes feared she would and removed the lace she had tucked into her dress to cover herself.

The effect was pleasing, but…

Leenie Brown fell in love with Jane Austen's works when she first read Sense and Sensibility followed immediately by Pride and Prejudice in her early teens. As the second of five daughters and an avid reader, she has always loved to see where her imagination takes her and to play with and write about the characters she meets along the way. In 2013, these two loves collided when she stumbled upon the world of Jane Austen Fan Fiction. A year later, in 2014, she began writing her own Austen-inspired stories and began publishing them in 2015. Leenie lives in Nova Scotia, Canada with her two teenage boys and her very own Mr. Brown (a wonderful mix of all the best of Darcy, Bingley and Edmund with healthy dose of the teasing Mr. Tillney and just a dash of the scolding Mr. Knightley).

  1. Uh-Oh, now we get to see the jealous side to our Wes. Serves him right. Now he will see what other men think of his… em… our Mary. This is going to be fun and exquisite torture. Poor guy. I can’t wait to see this played out.

That photo… that poor girl does not look like she was having a good time. The dress was lower than what she normally wore… see the tan line. I wonder if she plays at all. Her expression is totally bored, tired, an/or thinking… you owe me big time for this. LOL! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Oh, yes, we are going to get to see some jealousy in this story. 🙂 No, that girl does not look like she is enjoying herself at all. LOL

  2. Lovely picture! I just read Chapter 4 of Persuading Miss Mary on Patreon.. If you don’t belong, please join! You will be glad that you did! The chapter is intriguing.

    1. I think the young lady in this picture is rather pretty in her pink dress. I could see Mary looking like this.

I’m glad you enjoyed the chapter!

  3. Oh ho ho ho. Get a grip Wes. Mary needs some heads turning her way, it will be good for her self esteem. And it will give ol’ Wes the kick in the innards he needs to get down to business. Ah, that painting. Yeah, I agree with J.W., she’s plotting her revenge for sitting for that painting….probably her “Muh-THURR!” Oh Lady M., she knows what she’s doing. 😉 This is so much fun, Leenie.
