What if Mr. Darcy was engaged to his cousin Anne?

What if she died before they could make their engagement public?

What if Mr. Darcy had only just met Elizabeth and had begun to feel attracted to her when he hears that his Anne has died?

Well, those are some of the questions that prompted the writing of Mr. Darcy’s Comfort.

This story and it’s sequel both spend most of their time in a setting where sorrow stands at the door and even comes in … unbidden … to sit for a while.

Grief and sorrow are most certainly present in the scene from Mr. Darcy’s Comfort that I’m sharing today, since it takes place, in part, in a room, where loved ones are sitting vigil, much like is happening in the image above.

An Excerpt from Chapter 4 of Mr. Darcy’s Comfort

…“How is your heart?” Richard asked as Darcy threw back the covers and swung his legs over the edge of the bed.

“It aches a great deal more than the rest of me.”

“Will you sit watch?”

Darcy nodded. “I should like to. Will Aunt Catherine allow it? I am not female.”

“She has allowed Father, so I am certain she will allow you to take a turn as well.” Richard rang for Darcy’s man as Darcy made use of the chamber pot before finding his robe and taking a seat near the fire to enjoy another small amount of port.  “However, you have been ill, and we would not wish for you to become so again, so your activity might be limited. Do not push yourself beyond what you are able.”

Darcy heard the worry that lay beneath the slightly severe tone Richard used. “I will do my best,” he agreed.

Richard smiled. “I shall see that you do.” He nodded to Darcy’s man and made his way to the door. “I shall see you in the breakfast room. You must eat.” He stood at the door and waited until Darcy had given his agreement that he would eat before leaving the room.

After having eaten, Darcy made his way to Anne’s small sitting room.  He paused outside the door for a moment, blew out a breath, drew another, and though his heart would not remain beating at the pace he wished it would but instead insisted on increasing its rhythm, he stepped into the room.  Anne lay peacefully at one end.  She looked no less fragile in death than she had in life.

“Aunt Catherine,” he said softly. He knew that though Anne looked as if she were sleeping, she was not, but still, he kept his voice low as speaking any louder seemed wrong.

His aunt looked up from her work of tying black ribbons around small packages. “I have one for you, Darcy.” She searched her basket and pulled out a larger item.  It was wrapped in lavender cloth and tied with the same black ribbon she was using on her current project.  “I selected a few items for you that I know she cherished.”  She held the gift out to him. “She is still beautiful, is she not?”

Darcy turned his head to look once again at Anne. “Yes,” he answered. Anne’s was not a classical beauty but one of delicacy like a fine piece of china. “I have come to spend some time with her.”

Lady Catherine rose from her chair. “You would have been good to her.” She placed a hand on his arm. “And she would have made you happy. I know it.”

Darcy smiled. “I believe you are right.”

She sighed loudly as if lifting some heavy object.  “You shall never be my son.” She patted his arm. “It is a pity.”

“Indeed, it is,” Darcy agreed. It would not have been an easy task being her son, but he could have managed. “Mother would be disappointed, would she not?”

Lady Catherine patted his arm again and nodded. Her lips were firmly pressed together, and her eyes were watery. He knew she was not the sort of lady to allow her emotions to be aired before others. Therefore, he respectfully looked away.

“Mother has likely met her, and they are having tea while Mother shares stories about you.”

To his surprise, he found himself wrapped in his aunt’s arms. It was something that had not happened since just after his mother had died.

He squeezed her tightly. “I may never be your son, but I shall always care for you,” he whispered. “I promised Mother I would.”

“You are a good boy,” she replied. Then, she straightened herself, gathered her basket, and left him alone in the room.

Darcy walked over to where Anne lay and studied her face. “Your mother is going to miss you. She already does.”

He and Anne had spoken about how Lady Catherine would adjust to Anne’s being in Derbyshire after they married. They knew that, eventually, Lady Catherine would come to live with them.  Darcy had planned to have Richard see to Rosings until it might be needed for a second son of his and Anne’s to manage it.

But now? He blew out a breath. Things were different now that Anne was gone. The fate of Rosings would lie in the hands of his uncle, Lord Matlock, according to the provision in Anne’s father’s will. However, there was time for all that to be decided.

“Your mother can still live with me if she so chooses,” he assured Anne. “I will not cast her aside unless she becomes too demanding. Then there is that cottage we had discussed as being perfect for her.”  He smiled down at Anne. “What shall I do without you? I am not good at conversing with ladies. How shall I ever convince someone to take me on?”…

Music Monday: Home (Phillip Phillips)

PUBLISHED TO YOUTUBE BY PHILLIP PHILLIPS ON AUGUST 2, 2012.

This song is one I often listen to as an instrumental cover by The Piano Guys while writing, but I thought that today, I would share the vocal version, which is on my Whatever for Whenever Spotify playlist. (This song on Spotify can be found here.)

The lyrics are what has me pairing this song with Master of Longbourn today. The Mr. Collins in this book is searching for a home. He has demons that fill him with fear. However, he finds himself surrounded by those who are willing to help make Longbourn his home.

Master of Longbourn, Ch. 8

Using the candle he held in his hand, Collins lit a second one that was in the lamp on the table next to where Mr. Bennet had been sitting earlier that day. He looked around the room.

Mr. Bennet had told him he was to make this room his second refuge. His first was his bedchamber, of course. There he could lock himself away without there being much chance of being disturbed, but here, he was more accessible, and here is where Bingley had very firmly insisted he should read each evening.

Truth be told, Bingley had wished for him to sit with the others in the sitting room, but Darcy had pled his case and convinced Bingley that the study would be better for reviewing what needed to be learned.

Collins tipped his head and eyed the book on the desk. He wanted to go over it again. He was positive he could remember nearly everything Mr. Bennet had told him about the tenants listed in it. He glanced at the door. No one was with him; he could peek at it.

He crossed to the desk, placed his hand on the book, and just as he was about to lift the cover, shook his head and retreated to the chair near the lamp without the book. He did not want to have to tell Bingley or Darcy tomorrow afternoon that he had spent another evening studying, for both gentlemen had thought it best if he spent one evening consuming the novel he had promised Kitty he would read.

He sighed as he settled into his chair, and taking up his book, he placed it unopened in his lap while he pondered the lovely Miss Kitty Bennet and watched the shadows chase each other in the flickering dance of the candles’ flames. Perhaps in the new year when Bingley had his ball, he would dance two sets with her. Perhaps by then, she would even be accepting of his addresses, or at least, by then, he would have learned enough from Darcy and Bingley to be able to present them. By spring, he might even find himself in a position to make her his wife. That thought could not be made without a smile finding its way to his lips.

“May I enter?”

Evelina clattered to the floor as Collins started at the sweet voice that called to him from the door.

The Saturday Broadsheet for April 25, 2020

I hope you are staying safe and well. I and my family are safe and well, which, this week, means more than we have not contracted a virus because last weekend our province was the site of the worst mass shooting in Canada. To say it has been a challenging week is an understatement.

Be that as it may, I still went to work and did the things, and, below, you will find information about what I accomplished in my writing life this week, as well as publishing information and book sale news.

Writing News

Here’s an update on my writing I have with a short excerpt from two of them.

Her Convenient Forever: I wrote chapter three this weekSo, I am on track to start posting that story on my blog on May 12 as I had hoped I would be. Here is an excerpt from chapter 3.

A New Release, A Kobo Promotion, and A Question for You

Happy Saturday! I’m happy to see you back here today. I hope you had a good week. Mine went pretty well. I am actually feeling like I might finally get to the top of this writing mountain with some goals and plans in place for the coming months — or, at least, a start to those goals and plans. 🙂 Here’s some of what is going on in my writing world.

Writing News

I got a good bit of writing done this week — 2 chapters of His Irreplaceable Belle and 1 chapter of Marrying Elizabeth (book 5)

I spent one evening rereading Kitty and Lorcan’s story and getting all the chapters I have written of that scheduled on my blog and at Patreon and then pairing them up with images. Finding those images took a while, but then, that can be a fun research hole to fall down. 🙂

I have begun thinking about what other writing project I will start next. I am considering doing some revision work to a few of my current Teatime Tale stories and making them longer (about the length of my Nature’s Fury and Delights stories) and writing a few new ones. However, I am only in the planning stages now, and there are other options like the next Other Pens story or the next Darcy Family Holidays story.

A Question for You

Do you have a preference as to what I write next? I’d love to hear it. I have made a form that you can find at this link, where you can just check off what your choice is. The form will remain open until Thursday, January 23, 2020. That way I can have some results to share with you in next week’s Saturday Broadsheets.

Publishing News

Tuesday is the day! Her Secret Beau will be live to read in Kindle Unlimited and to buy in the Kindle store. The paperback is already available.

If you were one of the fortunate few who got an advance reader copy, you can start reviewing through the paperback page.

This is the link to the paperback edition of Her Secret Beau on Amazon.com.

And don’t forget that you can also recommend the book on Bookbub.

Kobo Promo

Calling all Kobo Readers:

I three boxsets that have been selected to be part of a Kobo promotion:

A Dash of Darcy and Companions Cottage Collection 1
A Dash of Darcy and Companions Cottage Collection 2
Darcy And…A Pride and Prejudice Variations Collection

This promotion is administrated by Kobo, and there will be a promotional code that must be used at checkout to receive 40% off these boxsets. I do not yet have this promo code and will likely not have it until the sale has started. This promotion will run from January 22, 2020, to January 27, 2020.

Book Review

This is an older review for Mr. Darcy’s Comfort. I selected it, first of all, because I wanted to show a Bookbub recommendation this week for those who might not have ever seen one before. At Bookbub you can follow author and reviewer, and you can like and comment on the recommendations. The second reason I selected it is because this is one of the novellas in Dash of Darcy and Companions Cottage Collection 2 which is part of the Kobo promotion this week and will be entering Kindle Unlimted in February.

I must say that I was delighted to hear that Mr. Collins was intriguing. (He is not the Mr. Collins you might expect. 🙂 )

KU Changes Reminder

Remember that the Choices series will be leaving KU on February 16, 2020, and that A Dash of Darcy and Companions Cottage Collection 2 will be entering KU right around that same time, which means that boxset and the individual titles will be leaving the other vendors just before that.

In Closing

Thank you to all who took advantage of or shared about the free days for Her Beautiful Bea and the 99 cents days for His Darling Friend. They went very well. It’s exciting to think that there are several readers who are going to get to meet the characters in this series for the first time.

Remember that you can share your preference for what I write next at this link. I will take your input into consideration as I continue to make my writing plans.

Have a lovely weekend! I’ll be back on Monday with some music and a story excerpt.
