Can't you just imagine Lady Matlock doting on her little boys, and they returning the love and giving her kisses? I'm thinking Wes would be happy to be less well-loved in this chapter. ;)

“You are not leaving.” Lord Matlock stood in front of Wes’s door the following morning, blocking Wes’s path. “Your horse has been returned to the stable. Your mother will not be persuaded to let you leave until you are completely well, and I will not be persuaded to go against her in this.”
Wes sat down on the edge of his bed. His father was actually forbidding him from leaving Matlock House? That was new. He had expected his mother to be put out with him for leaving before she declared he was well enough to do so but not his father.

I can see Lady Matlock being very Motherly with her boys. She is a sweet Mother and wants what’s best for her family. Love her…
She is a very loving mother in her own unique way, and I can totally see her snuggling her little ones.

Oh, Wes, you missed your opportunity to go out with the tide and you are now stuck in harbor. Bless his heart. He is now facing this situation on several different fronts [mother, and now even his father] and it is starting to look like the forces have gathered against him. Eventually, he will have to deal with Mary. Suck it up dude and face the lady like a man.
I saw this picture and thought of a little rascal trying to make up to his mama for his antics by giving her hugs and kisses and immediately that brought Wes to mind. LOL
